ok, can anyone explain to me why the baloons sometimes give you only 20 rings and other times give you 40?

Apparently not, but I wouldn't rule it out; recently, I've realised that anything abnormal can be explained by saying "You bought a PAL version, didn't you?".

I never noticed 40 ring balloons... I thought they were all 20, but I have to keep my eyes on the road and don't see how much my ring count changes.

I have noticed that they don't all give me a boost, even though they are all at least 20 rings. WTH?

in my NTSC GC one--it depends on how many rings you have before getting the balloon. Or at least, that's what I've noticed.

edit--I just posted some of my old racing times and mine for 280 mission 2 is in 2nd place--so the strat is figuring out at what ring count you need before grabbing the balloon so you get more rings... Man those were some old times--I was just competing to what I could get. BTW--what's the secret to getting a good 101 overall time on mission 1--as my time is really bad in comparison there.

edit2--I'll go through some of my times and if I see anything that's above 20 I'll probably post it; but since I didn't work on those levels very much, I doubt it. I did some work on those racing levels (what's the secret to the standard track?--I remember I crashed on my expert run--so for now I'll believe that one, lol)

If I'm doing Route 101/280 Mission 2 and I get the ballon in the checkpoint and it isn't a 40 I just restart.

Actually, they come in 20 and 10.
the 20's are the ones in the "pit stop" areas, which give you 20 rings and a free boost. but the boost resets your boost counter.

exp: rings 36, next boost 40 *grabs a 20 ring baloon* rings 56, next boost 76 rings

the 10's just add to your ring count.

I can't think of a time where I've got 20 in the pit lanes... And I've got a PAL version :P
